NC Standard Course of Study Objective: 4.01 Identify and analyze the significance of the causes of secession from the Union, and compare reactions in North Carolina to reactions in other regions of the nation. 4.03 Assess North Carolina's role in the Civil War and analyze the social and economic impact of the war on the state.
Skills Competency Goals: 1.01 Read for literal meaning. 1.02 Summarize to select main ideas. 1.03 Draw inferences.
Activity Description of Activities and Setting Materials and Time
I. Focus and Review (Establish prior knowledge) Students will read a letter from the Cameron collection, and without prior knowledge of its context attempt to place it chronologically. 5 min.
II. Statement (Inform student of objectives) SWBAT: Effectively use the SCIM-C method to read a collection of letters from
www.plantationletters.com and devise a high level question that is answered by the letters.
III. Teacher Input (Present tasks, information, and guidance) In the computer lab guide the class to the website and introduce the concept of SCIM-C using a handout and the overhead. 10 min.
IV. Guided Practice (Elicit performance, provide assessment and feedback) Guide the students through the SCIM-C method using a short letter from Paul Cameron. 10 min.
V. Independent Practice -- Seatwork and Homework (Retention and transfer) Students will work with a partner to use SCIM-C on an assigned letter. The pair will then form a high level question that can be answered using their reading. Students will print their letter so that work may be continued at home or in the classroom tomorrow. All remaining time.
VI. Closure (Plan for maintenance) Briefly review SCIM-C and expectations. 1 min.
