This activity is to compare and contrast the differences between the views of the three interviews of Doc Edwards, Cy Hart, and Abner Jordan and the information available on the internet and in student textbooks.
1. Students will be reading the interviews from
www.plantationletters.com. Each student should Search Letters and use the Document Viewer to search “Emancipation.” Read the interviews in detail and try to come up with some reasons why each individual stayed in NC after the Civil War. Use the document viewer to search the letters to back up some of your possible reasons.
2. Once you have a solid perception of why these freed slaves from the Cameron Plantation stayed in NC, search the internet and your textbook to find out what other slaves did during the time period. This should be in depth research covering at least 5 different sources. (Your textbook counts as one) Make sure that you cite all of your sources in MLA format.
3. After you have ALL of your information, your job is to create a visual presentation (voicethread, powerpoint, etc.) that discusses the similarities and differences between the three interviews and the information you found on other slaves.
4. The last step is for you to write a three-page response of your perceptions of the similarities and differences. The response should discuss what was going on during the time of reconstruction, and what life was like in the South during this time. Why did the Cameron slaves stay, and why did other freed slaves choose different routes? Were there other freed slaves other then the ones in North Carolina that stayed in the South? If so, what were their lives like during Reconstruction?
This project will be done in groups of three. However, the last step is to be done individually.
