Plantation Letters

I've decided to focus on Tony through the lens of Tony's fighting with Milton over stolen clothes. I did a little digging in order to have a better idea of who Tony was. I also wanted to get a feel of what the slave cabins were like (was it easy to steal things here?).

12-07-1844 P. Cameron to Duncan Cameron
The slave cabins were not what Cameron had expected. He was not allowed to go in to the best one as promised.

1-4-1845 P. Cameron to Duncan Cameron
Slaves repairing cabins.

5-21-1847 Lewellyn to Cameron
Old Tony, Anthony are carpenters.

Is "Old Tony" the same Tony who got in a fight with Milton? Who is Anthony? (Maybe Anthony is Old Tony's son...maybe Anthony is "Tony" who got in a fight with Milton?)

My guess is Anthony is the one in the fight, but not sure either. It s strange that CL handcuffed them over the fight though. He didn't admit anyway to being very strict. He said in one letter that he didn't whip Mlton when he got back, but did later. So my guess is it was some fight. Why do you think the fight was right around the time of Milton's attempt to escape? Were they selling the clothes or wearing them? rach

My thoughts are that Milton needed clothes either to sell or to take with him since he'd planned on escaping to NC. Atleast, this is the angle that I'm using. I thought of writing a story from the viewpoint of Milton stealing and then one from Tony stealing and see which one I like better. From Tony's viewpoint, I may assert that Tony was frustrated that Milton was leaving, and so, he stole from Milton to hinder his escape.

We'll see :)

I was wondering about that sequence of events as well. I forget which letter exactly that talked about the fight, but you might want to check out the letters I summarized in my section because there's one in there that might help!
